Hacking My Old Calculator?
I have a really nice TI-108 solar-powered calculator that I really like, but due to its being so ancient (I had it for as long as I can remember) its LCD screen is going shot, and some of the digits are unreadable. But since I liked this calculator so much, I got the idea into my head that if I could just safely take it apart and give it a new display, I'd be good to go.
I was only able to remove the back of the casing so far by using my smallest available screwdriver on it; the rest seems stuck in place with either plastic rivets or tiny metal screws for which I don't have a screwdriver. I intend on ripping the display out of a "Dollar Tree" calculator that has a dead, unreplacable battery to put into my TI-108, but it is completely held together with the same screws I cannot undo with my current tools.
How should I go about this, if I can? What tools do I still need? Will I have to modify the electronics in any way to make the new display work with my TI-108? Thanks.
You need to know exactly how many pins/wires/connections the old LCD has going to the circuit board and make sure the new LCD/screen has the same functions/letters/etc... as the old one! Find a new LCD, similar size that has the same amount of wires as the old one.
Then you need to solder out the old LCD and solder in the new one...
So if you want some input on what you will you need the LCD, Soldering iron, Solder (buy the smaller kind with a flux core if possible) and it sounds like you need some small screwdrivers (some dollar store has sets of the small ones you will need)...
