What is the general purpose of a PIT Maneuver?
I under stand it slows you down and spins you out but are police supposed to block you in when you slow down? Because it seems someone could just easily drive away once they regain control again...
General Purpose of a PIT (Pursuit Intervention Technique) Maneuver is to spin the vehicle out of control, and the sudden shock of the spin forces the engine to shut down, sometimes not even allowing the vehicle to be restarted for a few seconds or even minutes. If all else fails, it spins them out of control and allows the police to surround and box in the suspect, with minimal damage to the police units and resulting in a safe, non-destructive resolution.
Sometimes, a PIT Maneuver can cause a vehicle to roll over, or render the vehicle to be uncontrollable after a PIT as well.
Unlike other answers, police do NOT shoot out tires, service weapons are ONLY used as lethal force to kill.
