Shoulder to shoulder we sit overlooking
the valley that holds the red barn.
Kitty and Country Girl talk of the change
while Yidiot and Sin make a list.
bobby's girl's new and doesn't yet know
quite what it was that she missed.
We sit and we look, we talk and we list

And the girl in the homemade prom dress edged along the wall, a stiff smile pasted on her face. The daisy corsage her father bought her was starting to wilt as was her poofed-up, back-combed, lacquered hair-do. She made her way around the walls until she was standing with the other wall-flowers, the others who came without a date.
She tried not to be too noticed and tried to look like she was having fun. It wasn't at all like her fantasy though; Buk, star quarterback and heart-throb of every girl in school, was supposed to see her and fall at her feet to beg for a dance. But he was dancing with all the usuals, the cheerleaders and sycophants who competed to sleep with him.
Then like a dam breaking, she thought, "No! I'm done being invisible!"
She kicked off her heels, tossed them into the nearest trash can and laughed out loud as she left. Even Buk noticed her then, but she didn't care anymore. She wasn't going to be a cut-out paper doll who tried to look like everyone else - who emulated the Popular hair-styles and Fashions! The scene she made leaving the prom was nothing compared to the one when she returned. She stomped back in 45 minutes later; her hair was brushed out long and flowing, she was wearing jeans, a western shirt and an Aussie hat with the brim turned up on just one side. And...and she was wearing her cowboy boots. There was an acoustic guitar slung on her shoulder the way most girls carry a purse.
She stomped to the middle of the dance floor like she owned the place and the grin she was wearing may well have been the first real smile she'd ever smiled at them. There was absolute quiet as all eyes had turned to her, and that's when she said, "We been going to school together for over 11 years; I think it's about time we all got acquainted." Then she started playing that guitar like nobody's business and that, my friends, was the beginning of the real prom that night! It ended up more like a hoe-down in a barn; the girls had kicked off their own heels and the boys had tossed their tuxedo jackets on the backs of their chairs, and they did the Boot-scootin' Boogy all night long. Least that's what I heard happened. Wasn't there myself. Nobody invited me.
