How often does the heating lamp have to be on for red eared slider turtles?
I just got a baby red eared slider turtle and when its time to goto bed, the light for the heating lamp is pretty bright and distracts me from going to sleep. I just wanted to know if i am able to turn it off at night or does it need to be on constantly. It makes sense that the light should be turned off somehow for the turtle to sleep and go through its day/night cycles. i don't have a water heater either but i heard that there is a night light for turtles, if anyone knows more about these lights that would help a lot too.
The turtle does need to be on a day and night schedule. It's best to turn the light on when you wake up and turn it off when going to sleep. A few degrees of fluctuation during the switch isn't bad but if it changes more than about 5 degrees it's going to be too harsh. I would recommend getting a submersible heater with a thermostat to keep the water at a constant temperature. You could probably find one for $10-$20 that would work for your turtle. I don't use a light at night for my turtles, they bask enough during the day and the extra rays aren't necessary. Buying another lamp or switching bulbs day and night is expensive and time consuming. Bulbs are usually $10 at least each time they burn out, and they burn out more when you're switching them. A heater would be cheaper in the long run and would probably keep your turtle more comfortable by not having big fluctuations in water temperature. Hope I could help!
