Pen Teaching
advice on teaching my son to read and write please?
my son is nearly 4 and is very interested in words and letters. he can spell his name out loud using phonics.im teaching him to recognise letters. trouble is he struggles to hold a pen in the propper way and can draw a straight line but nothing else, (except for scribbles) is that normal? i bought him one of those wipe clean books with the alphabet to practice on.
am i doing this properly??? please give me some advice.
at four years old it isnt expected that he know how to correctly write all of his letters and numbers but he should at least know what they look like and recognize them as individuals letters without the memory of the alphabet song.
get him a gripper for his pencil. it is a thing that you slip on his pencil that correctly places the fingers(they look like triangles and you can get them now at cheap stores) this will help with his motor control.
another thing is to play with some not solf but some stiff play dough for making his fingers stronger. some shaving cream on the table is wonderful and its easy to clean.
he should be doing the pinchers grasp and if he is still having problems then get a fatter pencil with a pencil grasp and they will start placing thier fingers like that out of habit once they get used to it.
get him to draw straight lines on the paper by having a starting point that is the red light and the ending point being the green light. when he can master the straight lines then go to angles and then circles.
also get him to cut with scissors in circles and stuff.
get some magnetic letters and a magnetic board and have him arrange his name in order and work on letter sounds for right now.
keep doing everything else that your doing it sounds great.
